What Makes a Great Christmas Gift for Young Kids?

Our family is intentionally low-tech and mostly screen-free, so when it comes to gifts for young kids, we’re looking for things that engage their imagination, creativity, and are relatively low stimulation.

Specifically, when I’m looking for gifts or responding to our family member’s questions of, “What can we get your kids for Christmas?” I’m thinking about gifts that are:

  • Open-ended
  • Multi-use
  • Easy to store
  • Durable and engaging
  • Align with our family’s values.

Why do Small Space Families Need to Gift a Little Differently?

When you live in a small home, every square foot matters! And that means that every gift that comes into your home matters too.

During the Christmas season, it can feel like toys and trinkets are multiplying overnight. Small space families know that what comes in to the home really needs to be thoughtful, useful, and truly loved in order to justify the valuable real estate of storing that item.

That’s why this gift guide is filled with ideas to maximize joy without taking over your living room. We’re going to gifts that fit your space, your lifestyle, and your kids’ development and imagination.

Open Ended Toys to Give as Christmas Gifts for Young Kids:

Open-Ended toys are toys that spark imagination, creativity, and continue to be engaged with and enjoyed through various developmental stages. They result in years of fun, not clutter.

I have an entire blog post written about our family’s favorite 10 open-ended toys. You can check out the whole list there!

But for the purpose of this gift guide, our top 5 open-ended toy picks for young kids are:

  1. Magna-Tiles and Magna-Tile People – These allow for endless building options and imaginative play for ALL ages, and they can be stored relatively compactly.
  2. Play Silks and Beach Towel Clamps – The creative uses of colorful pieces of cloth and large clothes pins is truly astounding. Again, something that all ages seem to engage with.
  3. Animal Figurines – Fantastic main or supporting characters in imaginative play and family adventures.
  4. Inertia Trucks – These sturdy little inertia trucks have had a surprisingly long life span in our home. Originally intended for toddlers, my older kids still find many, many ways to play with them!
  5. Felt Balls – Simple, quiet, sensory-friendly, unassuming, and absolutely some of the most useful toys ever! They are endlessly repurposed in our home, become food, rocks, doll accessories, or objects to use with target practice.

Experience Gifts for Clutter-Free Christmas Gifts for Young Kids:

Experience gifts are becoming popular, and they are fantastic for families in small homes as they contribute zero clutter to the home while still delivering a lot of joy!

Some of our favorite ideas for experience gifts include:

  1. Zoo, Museum, or Aquarium Membership – if your family has some kind of kid-friendly educational experience option nearby, a membership can make a great gift for kids and adults alike to enjoy!
  2. Special Outing Coupon Book – 5-10 options for some special outings can be a fun way to stretch out the gift giving experience. Simple things are totally fine, like an ice cream date, a nature walk, a trip to visit the local escalators, etc.
  3. Online Classes or Subscriptions – There are a lot of different enrichment and learning options online for kids! Things like art, music, dance classes, or nature study, etc. Pick something that aligns with the child’s interests.
  4. Seasonal In-Personal Classes or Activity Passes – My mom gifts our kids with swimming lessons almost every year for Christmas. They love it. And she loves knowing they’re enjoying themselves AND learning a valuable skill. You could consider ice skating or an indoor play gym, or parkour, or Irish Dancing, among many other options!
  5. “Yes Day” Gift Certificates – My husband and I did this for our niece and nephews one year for Christmas. We presented a few options for activities, food, drinks, etc for each child, and gave them the choice of choosing the final selection for our day out together.

Quality Time Gifts for Young Kids:

Quality time gifts are really about giving the gift of intentional connection. They’re a beautiful way to strengthen relationships with the child and create memories to savor together!

If you’re looking for quality time gifts for young kids, consider these options:

  1. Parent-Child Journals – I started a mom-and-daughter journal with my oldest child on her 7th birthday, which is when she was starting to feel confident writing messages herself. It gives us a space to share with each other in a more in-depth and private manner than just talking together.
  2. Board Games – we love playing board games with our kids! From magnetic snakes and ladders (which we play with our 3 and 5 year old, and is great for keeping the pieces on their spots!) to much more advanced Cascadia, board games are a fantastic option for spending quality time with a child.
  3. Baking Date – remember cookies in a jar? There are a variety of options you could consider, but the idea would be to gift the child with a cooking or baking project to do together so you can make something delicious while having quality time! Other options might be a DIY Pizza Night with pizza ingredients, Mac-and-Cheese meal, or brownies or hot cocoa in a jar.
  4. Read-Aloud Book Bundles – most kids I know enjoy being read to! My children are definitely big fans. So several books around a theme (their favorite animal or interest, a holiday or seasonal theme, or books by a certain author) would make a lovely gift for a young child who enjoys being read to.
  5. Craft Kit with a Coupon for a Date – time to do a mason jar craft together would be a perfect gift for young kids that enjoy crafting and quality time.

Use-Up Able Gifts:

In a small space, gifts that can be enjoyed and used up mean no long-term storage is necessary! These can be wonderful options for small space living families.

Some ideas may include:

  1. Snacks – whether this comes in the form of favorite snacks or a sampler box for some new things to try. My kids love all forms of individually wrapped snacks!
  2. Paint with Water Color Books or Paint with Sticker Books – painting with water or stickers is a low-mess, use-up kind of gift! There are a variety of options, from excavators to animals to unicorns and castles to fish, or even a sampler pack on six different themes!
  3. Bath or Shower Activities – bath crayons, fizzy bath bombs, bath crackles, bath tub paint, or bubble bath dough are all bath (or shower) time gifts for young kids to encourage sensory play in a relatively contained location!
  4. Sidewalk Chalk – from bike or scooter tracks to fun messages to beautiful artwork, sidewalk chalk is a great option for families with small spaces because it encourages outdoor play AND it gets used up!
  5. Temporary Tattoos – with many designs, you can find temporary tattoos to fit any child’s interests. And once they’re applied, there’s no need to store anything!
